Some great pics on here. Some seem new. Great perusing.

This link is from Retired AA Captain Gary Yudell’s news letter, “Some News of the Day.” It is a wonderful historic collection.

        Jeff -

No Garfunkle involved in the Muschle Shoals Rythm Section for that song....

Some in the film industry urge the return of Kodachrome to help solve the archiving difficulties, especially their early digital only works.

An interesting take on the problem was in a recent IEEE piece:

What I find interesting is it didn't explore the idea of keeping the older LTO formats alive. The two generation thing is just the mainstream support. I'm not sure as there's any obstacle besides money to maintain a stock of older players. It's not practical for most people, but given the costs to migrate a whole library, it seems like an obvious question that someone would have looked into.

It says an LTO-6 is $3,000. Let's say it lasts long enough to play back 50 tapes on average. (I'd hope it's a lot higher.) A 50,000 tape library either needs to spend $5.75M on new cartridges, or buy 1,000 drives for $3M so they can sit out a generation or two (or three). Sounds like market opportunity to me.
