What I find interesting is it didn't explore the idea of keeping the older LTO formats alive. The two generation thing is just the mainstream support. I'm not sure as there's any obstacle besides money to maintain a stock of older players. It's not practical for most people, but given the costs to migrate a whole library, it seems like an obvious question that someone would have looked into.

It says an LTO-6 is $3,000. Let's say it lasts long enough to play back 50 tapes on average. (I'd hope it's a lot higher.) A 50,000 tape library either needs to spend $5.75M on new cartridges, or buy 1,000 drives for $3M so they can sit out a generation or two (or three). Sounds like market opportunity to me.
