  • The Last Tuskegee Airman Gone West

Hardy, a lieutenant colonel, became the youngest Tuskegee fighter pilot at 19, and was among the first Black military pilots in the United States.

I had the honor of meeting three of them and sitting down to lunch with them years ago. Glad I did that in time.
Geology rocks, but geography is where it's at.

I met several of them in the food line at an Air Show at KFDK. I was there with the T-34. Due to late contact, no room, but close enough wife could drive out, and they gave her free entrance and allowed her to eat with the show pilots/workers/special guests. So we are in line and one of the organizers asked if these gentlemen could cut in front of up. Turned at it was about 5 of Tuskegee Airmen. They were special guests for the tour of the P-51B that had just returned to flying.

We said of course they could. And enjoyed chatting with them in line. Wonderful guys.

There were several who settled in the Oakland, CA area when I was based at NAS Alameda. They'd come over to the O'Club on Fridays for Happy Hours. They'd drink and roll the dice with us at the bar on many a happy occasion.
