  • Gatwick Ops Disturbed by Drones

From the WSJ: "LONDON—More than 100 flights at one of Europe’s busiest airports were grounded Thursday by drone operations that authorities say were a deliberate attempt to disrupt travel.

"Police and military forces were involved in the response, Britain’s aviation minister Liz Sugg said. Sussex police said the drones were of an “industrial specification,” rather than a toy or amateur unmanned aircraft.

"The drone flights near the airport began late Wednesday and continued into Thursday, the airport operator said. Some flights, including to the U.S., were grounded and others diverted to land at other airports, stranding, diverting or delaying tens of thousands of passengers in the run-up to the busy holiday travel period."

One of the articles showed a picture of some official dudes (Army? Police? Security? Dunno) making tentative plans to shoot it down. The way one of them was holding his weapon, he's probably blown his foot off by now...

OK, BBC says the Army is deploying "specialist equipment", whatever that may be.

Two arrests have been made. Indications that some kind of anti-drone technology has been deployed, perhaps the Israeli-developed Drone Dome system. Some news reports suggests the perps could face life in prison.

The two people arrested yesterday have been released without charges, after police decided they weren't involved. A damaged drone was found just outside the airport today, so the usual forensics are in progress.

...and now the word "hoax" is being floated, and authorities pointedly refuse to rule it out. Also, the husband of the arrested couple is an R/C modeler.
