Which iPad and Which ForeFlight?

This will be mainly for a C182.

There will be some typing and swiping, but I figure I can rest the base of my hand on the yoke or the edge of the device.

Since this will be used as in flight chart and approach plate, I would prefer to not have it leg mounted. But may try that just to be sure

If I were writing with pen or pencil, the yes, leg is better than yoke.

For active chart use, yoke is best. It’s why I put my paper Jepp iap printout on the yoke for use, same reason.

I use a yoke mount for my iPad Mini and really like it. I think it is the MyGoPilot mount, but there are others that work as well. It fits nicely in the yoke opening and can tilt easily to eliminate glare. My larger iPad was inconvenient... I had a mount but could not find a place where it did not block some of the panel. I used it more like a chart on the seat next to me when solo. The mini is the perfect size.

I use an older version of this RAM mount for my full-size iPad (10.5") used in Cessna C172, C182, and C210. They have a smaller "grabber" this is sized for the iPad mini as well. Very happy with it. https://www.sportys.com/ram-large-cl...0-x-gripa.html

I just ordered a Gen 9 iPad.

My Mini is Gen 2 and only 32 GB. And pretty full.

So much later gen, larger (eyes can use the help), and more storage space.

OK, I got the mount for the full sized iPad that John recommended. RAM yoke mount. It works well for that, but the connector piece is a little long and it sits a bit too close (C-182)

I also ended up getting the suction cup mount for my iPad Mini. That works well attached to the windscreen to the left of the panel.

I do wish that the RAM mounts were a bit more universally adjustable. Due to design, the adjustment at both ends are in the same plane. So sometimes I can't quite get the position I want.

I am going to play with both setups and see which is better. The yoke mount does let me use my right hand to tap and type, which is an advantage

Last time I flew iPad was still a twinkle in Steve Jobs' eye; I carried a ThinkPad X1 tablet. I'm looking forward to using iPad for sure. I'll start with my existing one of course - iPad mini 6th gen, 64GB, Wi-Fi only - and I actually have a RAM mount for it that I bought for another purpose, which lets it strap to my leg. Looks like there's Garmin Pilot and ForeFlight so I downloaded both of those to play around with as I get back into it.

Hopefully I can get by with this iPad until the mini 7 comes out later in the year. I already planned to get a Cellular 256GB next time even without taking flying into account.

Has anyone checked out the new M4 iPad Pro with OLED display? Should perform a LOT better in sunlight... the 11" size I'm concerned about taking up too much room in a C182 cockpit though. And it's "Not cheap" - even with my Apple employee discount

If you're not absolutely dead-set on latest and greatest, check on ebay. I get most of my Apple gear new in factory-sealed boxes for well under a typical employee discount. For current product, you might as well exercise your employee discount privilege.

A Mini 6 is perfect and will last you several years. Right now, the Mini 4s are a bit too old. They still work, but cannot be updated to the latest Fore Flight.

I am a ForeFlight user mainly, as that is what I started with. I get the Military (EVERYTHING) version by being a Civil Air Patrol pilot. Free FF and free flying.

I do have Garmin Pilot, mainly for wireless updating of my GPS. But GP has the advantage of the same look and feel as all the other Garmin stuff. If you have a Garmin airplane, then the Premium version of GP is included in your database package. But you still pay for the basic version.

+1 on the mini (I have a 6). It's perfect not just for the Hobbit sized airplane Terry flies, but ones for adults too like your old Saratoga and my 210. I had a "full" sized iPad for a while and just like the mini much better. Then again, it's usually stowed but I pull it out on occasion on flights for various things.

I have a regular size iPad also. I fly in those fat airplanes like Cessnas.

Actually, I do use it in the CAP 182s I fly. But I probably will not ever replace it and just run the Mini.

I fly with the 11" iPad Pro (3rd Gen) and ForeFlight. A couple of my students use Garmin Pilot, so I have some "over the shoulder" experience with it, and Garmin Pilot has come a long way in cleaning up its user interface. I still prefer ForeFlight, but can't really go wrong with either.

While I'm sure the new OLED iPad will be gorgeous, the 11" iPad Pro is heads and tails above the very first iPads I used when it comes to visibility in bright sunlight. When I'm Piloting, I have the iPad on a yoke mount. I'm using in a Cessna C210 or C182 in those situation. There is a certain amount of "looking around" the iPad, but my eyes (even with correction) aren't what they used to be, so while I love the physical size of the Mini I prefer the pixel size on the 11" iPad Pro.

I found no-line bifocals great for flying. Look at the world through the top, the panel through the middle, and charts, clearance, etc. through the bottom to the kneeboard*.

*I don' gotta show you no iPad. I don' nned no steenkin iPad

Bias disclosure: I think like bifocals are horrible.

I use my full size iPad in C-182s, yoke mounted and it works great.

WAY too large for my Mooney. And in the Mooney, you are closer to the yoke, so Mini works well.
